  • R.I.P. Jamie Bishop - Millions of people don’t know any one of the victims of yesterday’s shooting at VA Tech, yet they all grieve and sympathize for the families, the school and the students. Up until a few minutes ago I was one of those. I received an email from a former fellow graduate student from UNC-CH, expressing his grief for the loss of Jamie Bishop, the husband of Steffi Hofer, one of my former fellow graduate students. What was once total sadness and disbelief regarding the entire situation has become personal.

I am sorry for your personal loss.

It seems like everyone I know has some direct or indirect connection to this horrific event.

Our prayers are with those individuals and their families.

On another note, a comment on the media - only because of the article you linked.

Call me a weak-kneed liberal wussy if one must, but I see no justifiable reason to require that Mr. Bishop’s death be described as it was in the first graf. That description emblazons an image that is vicious and unsolicited. It is not the way I would wish to read about the loss of life much less the loss of a loved one. Simply writing, “when the gunman took his life” is all that is required.

This is life, not a screenplay.

Peace be with you and yours.

I also knew Jamie, through work at UNC.  Prof Koelb couldn’t have been more right when he said that anyone who knew Jamie would’ve never pointed a gun towards him.  It’s a shame that many victims of this brash action, including Jamie, were outstanding people.  My thoughts are with Stefi and everyone else trying to cope with this tough loss.
